Maplewood Drug Alliance
The committee is to organize and coordinate efforts involving schools, law enforcement, business groups and other community organizations for the purpose of reducing alcoholism and drug abuse.
Responsibilities
Purpose
The purposes of the Maplewood Alliance Committee shall be as follows:
A. To organize and coordinate efforts involving schools, law enforcement, business groups and other community organizations for the purpose of reducing alcoholism and drug abuse.
B. To develop, in cooperation with the South Orange/Maplewood school system, comprehensive and effective programs to combat alcoholism and drug abuse in grades kindergarten through 12.
C. To develop, in cooperation with the South Orange/Maplewood School District, procedures for the intervention, treatment and discipline of students abusing alcohol or drugs.
D. To develop comprehensive alcoholism and drug abuse programs which involve education, support and outreach efforts for parents in Maplewood.
E. To develop comprehensive community awareness programs dealing with alcoholism and drug abuse.
Function
The functions of the Maplewood Alliance Committee may include but not be limited to:
A. Creating a network of community leaders, private citizens and representatives from public and private human service agencies who are dedicated to a comprehensive and coordinated effort to promote and support educational programs and related activities, with an emphasis on youth, designed to prevent alcoholism and drug abuse.
B. Conducting an assessment of Maplewood to determine the needs of the township in relation to alcoholism and drug abuse issues.
C. Identifying existing efforts and services acting to reduce alcoholism and drug abuse.
D. Coordinating projects within the township dealing with alcoholism and drug abuse to avoid fragmentation and duplication.
E. Developing programs to be implemented in the township or participating in regionally developed programs that accomplish the purpose of the Alliance effort and the purposes of the Maplewood Alliance Committee.
F. Assisting the township in acquiring funds for Alliance programs through the establishment of a subcommittee on fundraising.
G. Cooperating with the Governor's Council on Drug Abuse and the Essex County Local Advisory Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse and providing municipal data, reports or other information which may be required for the Essex County Annual Alliance Plan, which is needed to assist the Alliance effort.
Members
The following shall constitute the membership of the Maplewood Alliance Committee:
A. The Mayor or a representative of the Mayor appointed by the Mayor.
B. The Maplewood Police Chief or a representative of the Maplewood Police Chief.
C. A member of the Board of Education.
D. The Superintendent of Schools or a representative of the Superintendent of Schools.
E. A student advisor at Columbia High School appointed by the Principal of Columbia High School.
F. A representative of Presidents' Council of the South Orange/Maplewood PTAs and Home and School Associations.
G. A representative of the South Orange/Maplewood Education Association (SOMEA).
H. A representative of the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce.
I. Two representatives of local religious groups.
J. Six citizens residing in the township appointed by the Township Committee.
K. Student advisor/substance abuse counselor at Maplewood Middle School appointed by the Principal of Maplewood Middle School.
L. The DARE officer of the Maplewood Police Department.
M. A representative of the Maplewood/South Orange News Record.
