Transportation Committee

The committee is to study, evaluate and report on the transportation, traffic and parking needs of the Township.

Responsibilities

The Committee is divided into 5 primary areas:

  1. Jitney--emphasis on making suggestions for running the service (e.g., route changes and fee adjustments in the Village and train station areas).
  2. Parking--emphasis on commuter permit parking and shopper/merchant parking in the Village and train station areas.
  3. Bicycling--emphasis on promoting bicycling for all ages and abilities by creating a bikeway that will link facilities in town and connect Maplewood to neighboring towns.
  4. Pedestrian and Traffic Safety--emphasis on promoting safety for pedestrians by improving use of crosswalks, linking sidewalks, providing better lighting and use of traffic signs.
  5. School Safety/Parking--emphasis on assisting schools in improving parking, traffic, and pedestrian safety around schools.

Purpose

The general purposes of the Maplewood Transportation Committee shall be to:


A. Study, evaluate and report on the transportation, traffic and parking needs of the Township; 


B. Encourage and promote balanced transportation to, from and within the Township, including alternatives to private automobile travel, such as mass transit, pedestrian travel and bicycling.


Functions
The functions of the Maplewood Transportation Committee shall include, but shall not be limited to:


A. Advising the Township Committee with respect to transportation issues and needs of the Township. 


B. Advising the Township Committee with respect to issues of concern to Township rail commuters such as train schedules, station access and train station parking. 


C. Advising the Township Committee as to the availability of various transportation and related grants and providing support in applying for such grants. 


D. Advancing the Township's commitment to a safer community environment by researching and advising the Township Committee about traffic calming methods. 


E. Monitoring and reporting to the Township Committee concerning the maintenance and regulation of state and county roads within the Township. 


F. Coordinating with and advising other committees and boards of the Township, including but not limited to the Planning Board, Safety Committee, Recreation Advisory Committee, Springfield Avenue Partnership, Maplewood Village Special Improvement District and Economic Development Commission. 


G. Furnishing an annual report of its activities to the Township Committee. 


H. Performing such other transportation-related tasks as may, from time to time, be requested by the Township Committee.

            

Meetings

Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  The meetings are held in the Conference Room of the Municipal Building and begin at 7:30 pm.

 

Members

The Maplewood Transportation Committee shall be comprised of the following members: 
A. Township Engineer (ex officio), to be appointed by the Township Committee. 
B. Not more than 12 residents of the Township, to be appointed by the Township Committee.
