Mission Statement :
The mission Statement of the Maplewood Fire Department is to minimize the loss of life and property threatened by fire, medical conditions and other emergencies by providing the best professional services possible with the resources at its disposal. In support of that mission, all members of this department are expected to attain and maintain a level of professionalism consistent with the noble professional they represent. The Maplewood Fire Department shall maintain continued fire education and safety for its residents and members.
2010 Department Goals
- Replace 4 company officer positions to increase incident scene supervision and better manage our required daily operation. This goal also meets recommendations from all firefighting standards. As priorities go, this goal is recommended by the DCA as one of the most important issues. We are in the process of purchasing a new aerial platform. A ladder company must have a company officer to ensure this piece of apparatus become a designated company. We must have an officer managing that piece of equipment.
- Hire 3 Firefighters to bring our (TO) back to 43 members. Realizing this is a very difficult task considering our present fiscal issues. The hiring may save money paid out in overtime at present. Hiring one firefighter back and floating two to different shifts may accomplish somewhat the same goal; we will continue to pursue this issue.
- Enhance our training program by increasing hands on training by 10%.
- Train our personnel on our new apparatus until they are extremely proficient. Increase by 15 % from present.
- Involve Maplewood in the Fire training initiative for regionally standardized training in Essex County (Essex County College)
- Establish regional communication among many Essex County Townships. (Working towards shared services).
- Purchase a new ambulance. Some of our present equipment is out dated including an ambulance and costs are increasing to maintain it. This purchase will help with our response and making sure we safely assist our residents by having the signature service they are accustomed too. “This is a priority”
- Increase medical billing revenue by being more efficient with information obtained per report and start to use paperless reports which have been negotiated with our new contract with our billing company (Tuff Books).
- Increase prevention and fire safety through the implementation of the Fire Sub code Official position to our Department. This will help to efficiently transfer critical building information from new construction projects to the fire department.
