The Municipal Welfare Department (MWD) administers the state general assistance program to single adults with no dependents and childless couples. The program is 100% state-funded and provides financial, medical and emergency assistance to eligible Maplewood residents.

Funding
In 2001, a discretionary fund, the Maplewood Fund, was created to assist families affected by the aftermath of 9/11. This fund provides year-round limited cash assistance to needy residents. MWD also coordinates the efforts of the Domestic Violence Crisis Intervention Team. Organizational efforts include volunteer recruitment, scheduling training, and providing administrative support, as needed.
