Recycling

Recycling is an important step towards Maplewood’s goals of becoming a greener place to live, work and play.  Additionally, improving recycling help to reduce waste disposal costs. Following is a list of items to assist in improving everyone’s recycling efforts:

RECYCLING CENTER

The Township of Maplewood's recycling center is located at 359 Boyden Avenue and is open to Maplewood residents only.  The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm, and Saturday from 9am to 12pm. The facility is for residential use only; commercial usage is not allowed at the recycling center.

For a list of acceptable recyclables please scroll down further. In addition to the items listed, the center accepts used motor oil, used cooking oil, air conditioners, washers, dryers, and electronic waste items (see description below), and all types of clothing and fabrics (wearable or damaged).

RESIDENTIAL CURBSIDE RECYCLING:

Curbside recycling will be collected EVERY Monday for the entire town.

If any of the following Holidays fall on a Monday: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, collections will be on the Tuesday after the Holiday.  For any other Holiday (not listed) that falls on Monday, collections will remain on Monday. In order to ensure recyclable items are collected, please be sure to place them curbside the evening before the scheduled collection.

All residential sources shall be allowed to place designated recyclable materials (other than used motor oil, lead acid batteries, household batteries, electronic waste, tires and textiles) at curbside in a manner and according to a schedule promulgated and published by the Township. Recyclables should be put in reusable containers, or clear plastic bags.

Designated recyclable materials may be placed at curbside no earlier than 5:00 p.m. on the day preceding collection and no later than 6:30 a.m. on the day of collection. Recycling receptacles must be removed from curbside on the day of collection no later than 7:00 p.m.

Scrap Metal Disposal

If you are in possession of scrap metal and are not sure how to safely dispose of it, take it to the Maplewood Recycling Center at 359 Boyden Avenue.  If the item is too large or heavy for you to transport, please call the Maplewood Department of Public Works at 973-762-1175 to schedule a curbside pickup.

Cooking/Motor Oil, and Antifreeze

Pouring used cooking oil down your kitchen sink, or toilet, will lead to blockages in your plumbing system, as well as the Township’s sewer system. When a blockage happens, it could lead to sewage backing up into your, or a neighbors, home.

Recycle your used cooking oil at the Maplewood Recycling Center. There is a large container on premises in which you can easily dispose of your used cooking oil in a safe and eco-friendly method. We also recycle used motor oil, car batteries, and antifreeze at the public works yard.

Motor oil can be disposed of in a large yellow canister on premises, and antifreeze can be disposed of in a white container directly beside the motor oil canister. Car batteries and air conditioners can be placed on the sidewalk directly beside the white antifreeze container. If you should need assistance locating the canisters, or lifting an air conditioner, please call public works at 973-762-1175.

Please keep in mind the antifreeze, battery, and oil recycling services are drop-off only. This feature is for residential use only; commercial businesses are not permitted to dispose of any materials at the public works yard.
