The Public Health Nursing staff and Health Officer at the local health deparment are responsible for monitoring and investigating communicable and infectious diseases in their jurisdiction. They rely on the timely reporting by laboratories and health care providers to alert them of a suspect or confirmed reportable communicable disease.
The local health department also works closely with the NJ Department of Health, Communicable Disease Service epidemiologists, disease investigators, nurses and health educators to report and investigate a case, especially during an outbreak.
Finally, local health department nursing staff work closely with school nurses and childcare/ daycare workers on preventing communicable and infectious diseases among young children, especially vaccine preventable diseases.
