Holiday Crime Prevention Tips

While a time for celebration, the holiday season is unfortunately also a time of increased crime. This holiday season, the Maplewood Police Department would like to remind all residents of the following holiday crime prevention tips:

Tips for Vehicle Theft Prevention:

  • Lock your vehicle
  • Do not leave keys/fob in the vehicle
  • Do not leave valuables in plain view--or in the car at all
  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Do not leave any personal identifying papers in your vehicle
  • Consider theft prevention devices
  • Do not leave a vehicle running while unattended if you can't lock the vehicle/engage the alarm

Tips for Personal Safety When Walking at Night:

  • If possible, don’t walk alone after sunset
  • Walk in groups whenever you can--there is safety in numbers
  • Let a family or friend know your destination and your estimated time of arrival or return
  • Stay in well-lit areas as much as possible
  • Walk on sidewalk whenever possible
  • Always be aware of your surroundings
  • If you are wearing headphones, keep the volume low enough to hear outside noises
  • Cell phones can be a distraction or a target for theft
  • Wear bright clothing

Tips for Package Theft Prevention:

  • Have the package delivered to your work
  • Have the package delivered to the home of a relative or friend that you know will be home
  • Have the package held at your local post office for pickup
  • Take advantage of the “ship to store” option that many stores offer.
  • Take advantage of “locker” options that allow you to pick up packages from a secure location
  • Request that the package require signature confirmation upon delivery
  •  Ask your carrier to place the package in an area out of plain view
