Attention Maplewood Residents:
This message is to inform you of changes within the recycling industry, and how it will affect your weekly curbside recycling. There have been significant changes within the recycling markets which require us to make adjustments to disallow the collection of certain items which were previously considered recyclable. If we don’t adhere to these changes, they will prove to be extremely costly to the Township, and could potentially double our recycling costs.
The most important change is that NO plastic bags will be accepted as a recyclable material. This includes plastic lawn bags, supermarket bags, and even the clear “recycling bags”. As plastic bags have become a major contaminant in the industry, beginning on Monday, July 9th, the Township will no longer collect any recyclables placed within plastic bags, or any visible plastic bags. All plastic bags should be disposed of with your regular household waste. Any items placed in plastic bags will be left at the curbside and remain uncollected.
Also, concerning plastics, residents should only recycle plastics that are labeled #1, or #2. All other plastics should be discarded with your household waste.
