Do Not Bag Recylables

Attention Maplewood Residents:

This message is to inform you of changes within the recycling industry, and how it will affect your weekly curbside recycling.  There have been significant changes within the recycling markets which require us to make adjustments to disallow the collection of certain items which were previously considered recyclable.  If we don’t adhere to these changes, they will prove to be extremely costly to the Township, and could potentially double our recycling costs.

The most important change is that NO plastic bags will be accepted as a recyclable material This includes plastic lawn bags, supermarket bags, and even the clear “recycling bags”.   As plastic bags have become a major contaminant in the industry, beginning on Monday, July 9th, the Township will no longer collect any recyclables placed within plastic bags, or any visible plastic bags.  All plastic bags should be disposed of with your regular household waste.  Any items placed in plastic bags will be left at the curbside and remain uncollected.

Also, concerning plastics, residents should only recycle plastics that are labeled #1, or #2.  All other plastics should be discarded with your household waste.

For further information on the Township’s recycling guidelines, including a list of acceptable recycling items, please visit the following link:

For any additional questions, please contact the Maplewood Department of Public Works at 973-762-1175."

In addition to the items listed, the center accepts used motor oil, used cooking oil, air conditioners, washers, dryers, and electronic waste items (see description below), and all types of clothing and fabrics (wearable or damaged).
Recycling is an important step towards Maplewood’s goals of becoming a greener place to live, work and play.  Additionally, improving recycling help to reduce waste disposal costs. Following is a list of items to assist in improving everyone’s recycling efforts:
